Housing for people with intellectual disabilities is being developed in Finland. Housing solutions are reformed away from institutional and systemized settings and towards more individualized solutions.
The reforms are based on the objective of strengthening the human rights of people with intellectual disabilities and on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
In the project (2009–2011)
- The aim is to enhance participation of people with intellectual disabilities in dealing with issues that concern them and finding solutions to the challenges they experience in relation to life management.
- Tools and methods are developed for dealing with the psychosocial concerns and challenging situations faced by people with intellectual disabilities, utilizing the tools of person-centered planning.
- Maps and paths
- Positive, solution-based risk assessment
- Assessment of need for help and support
- An ethnographic research project is conducted for exploring how people with intellectual disabilities perceive and experience their own circles of life, social networks and the functioning of the service system.
- The steering group is made up of persons with intellectual disabilities.
