Research themes

Accommodation

The theme of accommodation is divided into two research areas. On the one hand, the focus is on studying the independent living of people with intellectual and other disabilities and, on the other hand, on studying how the service system supports it.

Life conditions

The research on life conditions centres on the life course, quality of life and ageing of people with intellectual disabilities. Our most recent study in the area has examined the life conditions of people with disabilities in a heterogeneously outlined context of everyday life.

Service system

The focus of research on the service system has been on its ability to respond to the service needs. Recent studies have centred on deinstitutionalisation, i.e. decentralisation and dissolution of institutional care and the changes in the reorganised service systems, personnel issues, accommodation questions and service ideologies linked to this process.

Functional capability

Intellectual disability is today most commonly defined as limited functional capability. The assessment of a person’s functional capability requires a sufficiently comprehensive approach for identifying what kind of help and support she/he specifically needs in order to cope with everyday life. This calls for reliable methods of assessment.
