Functional assessment of people with intellectual disabilities

FAIDD has developed a new method, TOIMI, for assessing the functional capability of people with disabilities (Seppälä & Sundin, 2011).

This assessment tool is already widely used in the services for people with intellectual disabilities in Finland, and much positive experience has been gained in its application in a short time.

TOIMI coincides with the current definition of intellectual disability (AAIDD 2009) and covers e.g. communication skills, attention and executive functions, social competence, practical skills and mental resources. The service user participates in the assessment process as much as possible and the overall picture of his/her functional capabilities gives a sound basis for working out his/her individual service plan.
